CITY PREPARES AS LAST DAY FOR RESIDENTS TO PAY TAX BILLS WITHOUT PENALTIES APPROACHES
(7/30/2008) NEW HAVEN- Friday, August 1 marks the last day on which residents of New Haven can pay their tax bills without facing delinquency and a 1.5% monthly penalty. The penalty is calculated from July 1 to August 1 for a total of 3.00% as required by Connecticut General Statutes. For the first installment that is due for the 2008-2009 fiscal year, the city so far has collected 75 percent. The City has collected 98.03 percent of what is due so far in its attempts to close out the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
“By the time we close the books on the last fiscal year, we expect to meet or exceed last year’s collection rate of 98.61 percent,” said C.J. Cuticello, the City’s Tax Collector. “In past years we’ve reached the point where we are now and then seen collections increase significantly in the last few days of the period and quickly after people begin to receive delinquency notices. No one wants to pay that extra 3 percent so we encourage residents to get in here this week and pay what’s due.”
Residents are encouraged to visit the Office of the Tax Collector at City Hall between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Monday-Friday or from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturdays to pay their tax bills. Information on tax balances can be found online at www.cityofnewhaven.com.
